This week, I decided in an act spontaneity to head out to the Washington coast with my family. I did the math and realized for the price of putting my two kids in summer camp, I could instead just take a weeklong trip out to the coast. This speaks to both the great deal I found and the insane cost of childcare coverage in this country.
Due to the last minute nature of this trip, a lot of the “popular” spots on the Oregon and Washington coasts were largely unavailable. So I decided to lean in and see where I could explore that was available. We landed on a very delightful little fishing town on the coast. And by little, I mean the town is small but it’s the largest fleet of fishing boats in the state of Washington so actually quite impressive.
This trip has been perfect. Slow paced, not very crowded, tons of sun and fresh seafood and swimming. We are a 3 minute walk to the beach, we go down to the local docks daily to buy directly from the fisherman bringing in their catches of the day, and we even have access to a swimming pool!
Is this place fancy? No. Is it a five star resort or a tropical island? No. (All of those are my favorite). But it’s something very, very good in front of me right now that I didn’t even know was possible.
Wherever you feel stuck today or this week or this summer, ask yourself this question: “What is one good thing that I could pursue or receive right now?”
No matter where you are or what’s going on around you, my hope is you can find one thing. I always figure if the dying are often the best at savoring life, then it means there is something to savor for all of us.
Wishing you a lovely week, full of drinking in summer.
My small summer moment
This week’s small summer moment is that I began using our family’s e-bike. I was initially nervous to pick the kids up in it and ride it to work, but I have conquered both and happy to report I LOVE IT. Biking here in Seattle, especially in the summer, is magical.
May you try something new and brave this week!
